광진구에는 건국, 세종, 장신 3개의 대학교가 있어 학생 수가 29,441 명에 달하며 이 가운데 교환학생, 외국인 유학생 등은 2,614명으로 그 수가 상당하다.

2015년 11월부터 2016년 12월까지 외국인 유학생, 자취생 등이 많이 거주하는 대학가에서 적발한 쓰레기 무단투기 적발 건수는 1,596건으로 전체 건수의 35%에 달한다.

한국으로 유학온 지 얼마 안돼 한국생활문화에 익숙지 않은 유학생들은 무심결에 배달음식을 먹고 그냥 버리는 등 무단투기를 하는 사례가 빈번하게 발생하고 있다.

이에 광진구(김기동 구청장)가 서울시 25개 자치구 가운데 최초로 외국인 교환학생을 대상으로‘쓰레기 제로화’교육을 지난 9일 실시했다.

세종대학교와 협업으로 실시된 이번 교육은 외국인 교환학생들에게 올바른 쓰레기 배출에 대한 교육을 실시함으로써 우리나라에서 실시하는 쓰레기 배출방법에 대해 인식시키고 기숙사 주변 무단투기를 근절시키고자 마련됐다.

이날 교육은 세종대학교 군자관에서 세종대학교 주택형 기숙사에서 생활하는 외국인 교환학생 140명을 대상으로 영어로 진행되었다.

교육내용은 올바른 분리수거 및 배출요령, 종량제봉투 사용, 배출요일, 쓰레기를 버리는 장소 등에 대해서 설명했다. 또한 단독세대에서 자주 발생하는 주요 위반사례를 구체적인 사례로 들어 종량제 봉투 내에 비닐류, 종이류, 음식물류 등이 다량 혼입되어 있는 실제 폐기물을 학생들이 직접분류해봄으로써 분리배출에 대한 중요성과 분류방법에 대해서 알아보는 시간을 가졌다.

한편 구는 이번달부터 지역 내 초등학교 ․ 중학교 35개교에 직접 방문해 학생들 눈높이에 맞혀 종량제봉투 사용법, 분리작업을 통한 체험 교육 등을 알려주는‘찾아가는 분리배출 체험 교실’을 운영한다.

김기동 광진구청장은“이번 교육은 최근 문제가 되고 있는 외국인에 의한 쓰레기 무단투기에 대해 구청과 지역 내 대학이 함께 문제의식을 공유하고 협력적 해결방안을 제시했다는 점에서 그 의미가 매우 크다”라며 “앞으로도 구민들이 생활 속에서 자연스럽게 쓰레기 분리배출을 실천할 수 있도록 다각도의 방법을 강구해 쓰레기 제로화 광진을 만들기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
